2008-2009 Tucson Lobos Bi-monthly Newsletter

----------------------------- 10 / 30 / 2008 ----------------------------------

Dear Sponsors, Friends and Fans of the Tucson Lobos!

Well a new season is here and our exhibitions games start this week with the Lobos
hosting two games at our North West Community Center and then playing two more on
Sunday at the University Of Arizona Recreation Center. Dan Clamente is our new coach
and we have many new faces on the team. The new members include Jessica Stebbins,
Star Moss, Brandon Caswell, Brian Mote, Arturo Torres & Roman Rodriguez and paralympic
hand cyclist Greg Hockensmith. Greg has just tied the knot with the lovely Shelly Regan
and the Lobos wish them both success and happiness!

The economy has hit the wheelchair basketball world as well as nearly everybody else.
Due to cutbacks our gym hours have been reduced. Our Practice hours are now Tuesday and
Thursdays from 6-8pm. We are very thankful to have these hours provided to us by the
City of Tucson, Therapeutics and the great staff at the North West Recreation Center. There have also been some changes in the wheelchair basketball world. Previously there
were 5 total divisions in wheelchair basketball. D1, D2, D3, Collegiate and Women’s.
D1 which had the top athletes in the game has folded and those athletes are now playing with us in the old D2 league which is now called the Men’s Championship League. Changes
to rules will also occur this year in that division. There will now be only 3 seconds
allowed in the key (use to be four for wheelchair basketball) and we will now be
experimenting this year with a 30 second shot clock. The Tucson Lobos would like to thank their sponsors AZPVA, AZSCIA, PRN Medical, and the
City of Tucson. With your support we are providing competitive wheelchair basketball to
the community of Tucson. The program is going strong with more members now then it has every had, and we all appreciate your support. November was quite an exciting month for the Tucson Lobos. A new coaching
formula was established. Our practices work on forming a team effort that involves every
Tucson Lobos player. This way we are all on the court working towards the same goal. This is the Tucson Lobos Wheelchair Basketball Teams Seventh Season. So far
we've had 8 games for the 2008-2009 season. Our season started with new management,
playing some very difficult competition, & smoothly integrating many new Tucson Lobo
players. Working out fluidly at game time isn‘t easy, we, the Tucson Lobos players, are
all working together to achieve one thing. Lets have some fun this season! Tucsons local TV Channel 12 came by our home basketball court at 2160 N. 6th
Ave. Tucson AZ 85705 phone # 791-3247 Northwest Center on September 12th 2008. This film
was put on Youtube & been viewed around a few hundred times in one week. The Tucson Lobos Team were also filmed by Tucson Channel 12 a few years ago in
2005 after Brian Corrigan, our Tucson Lobos Teammate, was killed in a car accident. The Tucson Lobos are extremely thankful that Tucson Channel 12, the Northwest Center,
AZPVA, AZSCIA & PRN Medical have supported us throughout the years.. The Tucson Lobos were filmed during many of their games over the years & these
games are also posted on Youtube & Megavideo. The Tucson Lobos hope that these videos
have been helpful to NWBA Teams, but also helped answer some questions the public may
have about our highly active Disabled community. The Tucson Lobos videos have been
viewed around the world(France, Japan, Brazil, etc.) & been viewed nearly 15,000 times. The Tucson Lobos are looking to play a couple games in Phoenix December 27th
2008. The Tucson Lobos Tournament, January 10th 2009, has the UA Men, UA Women, Tucson
Sidewinders, & Phoenix Banner Wheelchair Suns set to play. Your continued time & support
is so helpful in making Tucson Wheelchair Basketball available to our disabled
community. When we all work together, in a team effort, we all have a good time, on &
off the court. Hasta lluego, Alejandra & John Buehler Tucson Lobos Web guy http://lobos21.tripod.com Calender of Events Dec 14th: Lobos travel to play the Surprise Roadrunners in Surprise, AZ. 2pm- Dec 27th: Lobos travel to play the Phoenix Banner Wheelchair Suns in Tempe, AZ Jan 10th: Lobos host Wheelchair basketball Tourney at NW Rec Center. 8:30-3:30pm
